about Peace Myth
I am a percussionist, composer, film-maker, currently using the pseudonym 'Peace Myth'.
My current music practice explores the potential for using percussion within the realm of emotive solo performance, by means of extended technology and preparation. This has led me to develop a series of hybrid percussion instruments as part of the composition process. This process involves building and prototyping the sound producing object; programming the software to extend sonic scope (using max/msp) and then playing the instrument to an audience.
While studying at Auckland University I developed the electro acoustic instrument 'the prepared trap set' and have gone on to develop 'the humdrum' (v1 and v2), 'the drumbow' and 'the mbiraphon'. My latest instrument is a modular electronic agglomeration which I call 'the conundrums*'.
The conundrum kit is essentially a multi surface percussion device which triggers sound and visual material. This performance platform could be thought of as 'modular synaesthesia**'
I also compose and arrange solo and ensemble music using traditional music notation and have a specific interest in composing for film. I was recently awarded a graduate diploma in music at Auckland University.
In a previous life I was the electronica artist known as 'reverbaphon'. I also practice as a fully qualified Architect.
My real name is Paul Smith
