Logos wins national sonic arts competition (SoundDome 2018)

This particular composition is inspired by research into the coded ratios which can be deduced from the interior architecture of the Gothic cathedral Notre dame de Chartres. The work uses sacred geometry and  mediating ratios which I derived from research into medieval cathedral design. The title of the piece is suggestive of the human fixation with geometric proportion as a manifestation of the meta-physical, which the ancient Greeks called Logos. The piece is completely notated and ready for an ensemble to play. It can also be played as a multichannel acousmatic media installation

Logos for seven liberal instruments - A site specific ambisonic installation based on the ratios and proportions of the naive elevation of Chartres Cathedral, France
The SoundDome is an acousmatic instrument comprising an array of 25-30 speakers within an 8-metre near -anechoic geodesic chamber designed for composed works of sonic art. The competition was open to all composers/sonic artists living and working in New Zealand and to all sonic arts genres including but not limited to stereo and multichannel acousmatic music, live sonic arts, generative music, sonic arts in the field, visual music, interactive installation and innovative forms of popular music.

The composition is designed for two discrete situations: 1) to be played by seven musicians positioned equidistantly around a circle delineated by a septagram or 2) to be played as a multi channel acousmatic piece using the speaker array within the SoundDome as described above re-creating a similar configuration to option 1). The septagram is conceptually, a geometric distillation of the gothic Cathedral. In order to invoke the spirit of the cathedral, the musicians (or speaker array) would perform (playback) positioned on the seven points, the seven intervals of the naive elevation.

The surround sound and stereo versions were released on DVD and also are available online at RATTLE Records as part of the SoundDome series https://rattle.co.nz/
